KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif and Court of Appeal President Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin have submitted their resignations and will retire on July 31, said the Federal Court Chief Registrar's Office on Wednesday.

The two judges' resignations have been consented by the Malaysian king Sultan Muhammad V, a statement from the Chief Registrar's Office said, adding that the resignations will only take effect later because they need time to settle judicial matters.

According to the statement, the two judges met Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on May 15 and "conveyed their intention to resign."

Raus and Zulkefli were due to retire last August and last September respectively as per a constitution provision, and they were reappointed by former Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2017.
