NEW DELHI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- India's main opposition Congress party on Wednesday won an election to a key assembly constituency in the southern state of Karnataka's capital Bengaluru.

Polling in Jayanagar constituency in Bengaluru was put on hold though elections were held across the southern state on Tuesday following the death of a candidate of the country's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The election to Jayanagar constituency was held Monday. "Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy has defeated her rival BJP candidate B.N. Prahlad by over 4,000 votes," a local election official told the media.

Karnataka is currently ruled by a coalition government of regional Janata Dal Secular (JDS) party and the Congress. JDS leader H.D. Kumaraswamy is the state's chief minister. This is the first major win by the coalition that evolved following a hung assembly.

The general elections are due next year.
