DHAKA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's ruling party candidate has won the Gazipur municipal polls, according to Raquib Uddin Mondal, a returning officer, on Wednesday.

Mondal said that "Awami League (AL) party's candidate Jahangir Alam beat his nearest BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party)'s candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker by a margin of 202,399 votes."

In the Gazipur vote, seen as test for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's popularity, her party's mayor aspirant Alam secured 400,010 votes while BNP mayoral candidate Sarker got 197,611 as per results of 416 centers out of 425 polling stations.

The counting of the votes cast in the city corporation of Gazipur, 40 km north of the capital Dhaka, begun Tuesday shortly after the polling ended at 4:00 p.m. local time.

Bringing an allegation of "unprecedented vote rigging" and various irregularities, BNP rejected the results of Gazipur City Corporation polls.
