NEW DELHI, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Torrential rains Monday hit India's financial capital Mumbai for the third straight day, inundating streets and rail tracks, officials said.

The downpour -- the highest of the season so far in a day -- saw roads and railway tracks flooded, triggering traffic jams.

People and vehicles at several places were seen wading in the water at several low lying areas.

"It is the highest rainfall of the season so far in 24 hours," a meteorological department official said. "In the next four days more rains are expected."

Traffic diversions and updates about trains running late are being continuously posted on radio stations, television news channels and social media.

Traffic police in Mumbai have cautioned people to drive safe in wake of the poor visibility.

Following the incessant rains in Mumbai, local government Monday closed schools and colleges as a precautionary measure. The rains also affected attendance in many offices.
