CAIRO, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian prosecution ordered on Tuesday temporary detention of the country's customs chief pending investigation into bribery charges, the official news agency MENA reported.

Gamal Abdel-Azim was detained Monday by the Administrative Control Authority (ACA), the country's anti-corruption watchdog, the report said.

The ACA said Abdel-Azim received bribes to facilitate the smuggling of goods prohibited for importing and without paying required customs duties.

The customs chief was also accused of instructing his workers to prepare false reports to reduce the fines on seized goods.

The prosecution also ordered on Tuesday to detain the briber and the mediator for four days pending investigation.

Egypt has been launching a massive anti-corruption campaign over the past few years that has led to the arrest and imprisonment of several senior officials, including ministers and governors, and the retrieval of large amounts of public funds.
