GENEVA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) worldwide reached a record high of 83.4 million by the end of 2024, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said.

According to a newly released Global Report on Internal Displacement 2025 from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, ongoing conflicts and violence remain the main drivers of displacement. By the end of 2024, 73.5 million people were displaced due to conflict and violence, marking an 80-percent increase over the past six years.

In Sudan, conflict displaced 11.6 million people, making it the country with the highest number of IDPs globally. In the Gaza Strip, nearly the entire population was displaced by the end of last year.

The report also notes that disasters triggered 45.8 million displacements in 2024, nearly double the annual average over the past decade. While most people were able to return home during the year, around 9.8 million remained displaced due to disasters by the end of 2024.

"These figures are a clear warning: without bold and coordinated action, the number of people displaced within their own countries will continue to grow rapidly," said IOM Director General Amy Pope.
