PYEONGCHANG, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Katie Ormerod has been forced to pull out of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games after suffering a severe fracture to her right heel bone on Friday.

The 20-year-old, who was scheduled to compete in the snowboard slopestyle and big air, will have to undergo surgery Friday afternoon.

Ormerod had been rated as one of Britain's brightest prospects for a medal, but suffered a double misfortune during training.

She sustained a fractured wrist on the first day of slopestyle training on Wednesday but, determined to compete when the event starts on Sunday, returned on Thursday only to suffer the heel injury.

Ormerod said on her official Twitter site: "After dreaming of competing at the Olympics for years, I got there and received the most bad luck I've ever had. Broke my wrist but was determined to compete, but then I severely broke my heel into two pieces and having surgery in a couple of hours. Absolutely gutted."

Mike Hay, Team GB's chef de mission, said: "We are deeply sorry for Katie and her fellow snowboarders who have lost a valued member of their close-knit team. She is a world-class competitor across both disciplines and we are desperately disappointed for her. From everyone at Team GB we wish her all the best for her recovery."
