ALGIERS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Algeria on Saturday expressed regrets over the joint airstrikes on Syria conducted by the U.S., Britain and France earlier the day.

"Algeria regrets the strikes that targeted Syria," Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said at a press conference held in Algiers.

"We have been expecting to send an international fact-finding panel to Syria to probe the the reality of the use of chemical weapons there," Ouyahia said.

He further noted that his country "recommends and encourages a political solution to solve the Syrian crisis," stressing that "military action would only deepen the conflict in this Middle Eastern nation."

The Algerian leader said that the Syrian crisis would for sure have impact on the stability of the Arab region which has been witnessing enough armed conflicts and crises in recent years.

He added that the forthcoming Arab League summit due in Saudi Arabia on Sunday would be an occasion to take a unified position about the Syrian crisis.

Earlier the day, the U.S., Britain and France launched coordinated airstrikes against Syrian military targets reportedly associated with Syrian chemical weapons program.

The attack was conducted under the pretext of punishing the Syrian government for the alleged use of chemical weapons in an attack on the rebel-held town of Douma in the east of Damascus on April 7.

The Syrian government has repeatedly dismissed the alleged chemical attack in Douma as fabrication by the rebels and their foreign supporters to justify military strikes on Syria.
