PHNOM PENH, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen won the most votes in the third mandate elections for municipal, provincial, town and district councilors on Sunday, according to preliminary results released by the National Election Committee (NEC).

Seven political parties contested in the elections, said the NEC, adding that they are the CPP, royalist Funcinpec Party, Khmer National United Party, Cambodian Nationality's Party, Cambodian Youth Party, Khmer Will Party, and Khmer Republican Party.

The preliminary results, issued by the NEC and announced one polling station by one polling station on the National Television of Cambodia (TVK), showed that the CPP received almost all of the votes in the elections.

The NEC said the temporary results will be announced on May 31, as the official ones will be on June 8. The elections opened at 7:00 a.m. local time and closed at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at all 203 polling stations across the kingdom.

NEC's Vice Chairman Nuth Sokhom said 11,565 sitting commune chiefs and councilors, or 99.94 percent of the eligible voters, cast their ballots, as a voter was killed in a road accident and six others were absent without reasons.

"The elections were conducted smoothly with good security and order, and without any violence," he said in a press conference at the conclusion of the elections on Sunday afternoon.

"The elections were held in a free and fair manner based on the principle of liberal multi-party democracy," he said.
